The friends of the Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus and the musicians of the Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus of North America cordially invite you to A Ukrainian Christmas Concert and Annual Fundraiser on Friday, December 15, 2023, from 7:30PM-9:00PM at Ss. Cyril & Methodius Parish.
Experience a 90-minute Christmas program featuring musicians from across North American led by Artistic Director and Conductor, Oleh Mahlay.
The Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus (UBC) was founded in Kyiv in 1918 yet was forcibly moved from Ukraine during WWII. Thanks to the assistance of the U.S. government, the ensemble made Detroit its home in 1949. Since 1949, the UBC has toured throughout Canada, the United States, Europe, Australia, and Ukraine.
The unique nature of the UBC is based on the 60-stringed instrument, the bandura. Today, the UBC is still based in Michigan as a 501 (c) 3 organization yet have musicians all throughout North America. All musicians are volunteers from different Ukrainian American and Canadian communities.
The “A Ukrainian Christmas” program will feature selections of Ukrainian and non-Ukrainian Christmas music, some of which was featured at Carnegie Hall in December 2022 as part of the “Notes from Ukraine” concert that honored the 100th anniversary of the debut of Shchedryk (commonly known as Carol of the Bells) at Carnegie Hall.
